Paranoia is what I think. The man was obsessed with germs.

If you watch Living with Michael Jackson, he would tell you the reason. One of the reasons was that he was a germophobic, and tried to shield himself from germs to avoid getting illnesses. Duh!!!
Cause his nose kept falling off.
So fans would not recognise him
he was clearly not mentally stable, there’s no way around that.

I always thought that it was because he was tired of people talking about his face or nose whenever he went out in public. I have no clue though.
Over the years there was quite a lot of speculation as to why he was often seen wearing a face mask. One possible reason, to hide his face while recovering from one of his plastic surgeries. Another because he had Vitiligo, and as a result of all the pigment in his skin dying, he became hypersensitive to sunlight.
These days a lot of people wear masks outside, either for pollen, or concern about germs.
(MJ had his kids appear in public wearing masks or veils, which was supposedly to make them harder for a would be kidnapper to recognize them. He had some serious nuts stalking him, and it wouldn’t surprise me. If a kidnapper doesn’t know what his kids actually look like, then they wouldn’t be able to pick them out if they went out with the nanny or someone occasionally, no one would know who they actually were because no one could ever get a clear photo of them when they were out in public with MJ.)
I heard an interesting one this morning, one of his body guards claims that he would sometimes dress up the guard to look like him with a surgical mask on to act as a decoy. There were occasionally reasons why it would be desirable for fans or media to think that MJ was going in one direction, when he was really going in another. In order to pull off that sort of thing, the public would need to be used to seeing him walking around in a surgical mask. A bodyguard with the right makeup, clothes, wig, hat and mask covering over much of his appearance would be able to distract people temporarily, if there were a reason he needed to do such a thing, so it would make sense if he went out with a mask on his face sometimes himself, then whoever saw the guy with the mask would go after the guy in the mask….For someone as likely to attract attention as he was, to me this seems like a plausible and likely reason, he already knew people thought he was weird, and even occasionally seeded rumors about himself to the tabloids. He was quite the showman.
So that he wouldn’t give the paparazzi the satisfaction of snapping pics and publishing mean captions.
Started off because he didn’t like germs, then he realized it impressed kids and so he pushed it even more.
Btw, you are getting confused there.
If you want your kids to have a normal life you *do not* get them to wear masks before they go outside.
