LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton may have been crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday, but on Monday, it was Miss California Carrie Prejean’s answer to a question about same-sex marriage from celebrity blogger and pageant judge Perez Hilton that was the night’s biggest story.
During the show, Perez asked Carrie, “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same *** marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?”
“Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. Um, we live in a land that you can choose same *** marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and in, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman,” Carrie said to a mix of boos and applause. “No offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think that it should be between a man and a woman.”
Carrie’s answer to the hot button question cost her the crown – at least according to Perez
Why should her personal opinion affect matters?

No. I totally agree with her anyway.
No — I agree with her and that judge should be dismissed permenaly for his lack of consideration — it doesn’t matter because in my opinion she won !!
She doesn’t make any sense apart from proclaiming what she “believes in” and purposefully being vague so she doesn’t offend anyone.
She says it’s “great” to be able to choose to have a same-sex marriage, but then she specifically says that she believes that marriage should only be between a man and a woman – which is contradictory.
She didn’t even answer the question, which was asking if all states should legalise same-sex marriage.
I don’t even know why they’re asking the contestants to express opinions. It’s not like it matters to anyone.
It’s her poor ability to speak. She spoke of “opposite marriage”. This is her description of a straight marriage. The questions are there to see if she’s a good representative. Forget the politics. She is a poor speaker.
This is just another example of brain washing our kids to think that homosexuality is a normal thing and if you disagree with it you must be punished.
No, I think that was the most bias and unfair judgin ever. If Iwere to say that someone should lose because they said they were for marriage of the same ***. I would be killed then and there.
Becuase it’s “Miss USA” not “Miss Straight USA.” She’s supposed to represent.
What a dumbazz – everyone knows who runs beauty pageants…
If the pageant is entirely about how she looks, what she thinks about anything is irrelevant.
Since the organisers decided to ask the question, obviously they were interested in what she thought about current political issues. Given her answer was “well, gee, no offense, but what my dad reckons is right is good enough for me”, then that’s a good reason to not win – don’t care what the issue is, she didn’t have a valid, well formed opinion, and so didn’t answer the question properly.
Because her answer to that question said a lot about her intellect.
No, but I think the way she phrases her answer should. Miss California’s response was not very intelligent, in my opinion. She contradicted herself (”it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other,” “it should be between a man and a woman”), and she referred to her family as her country.
No it shouldn’t but she should of just answered the darn question.
It should not. Usually what comes out of a womans mouth in these Miss USA, miss universe does not matter. It is all in the looks, I dont care what anyone says but its true
it’s a beauty contest.
it’s demeaning and it attempts to idealize a standard of beauty that the vast majority of women could never achieve.
And, it’s really, really boring.
Who cares what they say or do?
Perez made the contest political by bringing up the issue. It was shameful he brought his poltical axe to grind against her.
North Carolina’s question was dorky about why Americans can’t find the US on a map. it was compleatly unfair to judge Miss California on such a question compared to North Carolina’s question.
It’s sad really and a humiliation to the show.
Her opinion is one that should earn her the crown.
no, but using terms like “opposite marriage” and phrases like “i think that i believe” absolutely justify costing her the crown.
but you’re right, she has every right to voice her retarded opinions in a retarded way.
No. The question asked for an opinion and the contestant answered with an opinion. While I don’t agree with her opinion, it’s just her opinion.
personally, i think everyone is unique and has unique ideas and beliefs, and if there is a contest, in which they try to standardize beauty…. then they have to standardize personal beliefs, which is in my opinion, stupid. Please don’t judge me for my answer.
the question was obviously chosen to give the gays a boost, but they forgot that free speech is a constitutional right. well done young lady
No it shouldn’t have, and why someone who can’t appreciate female beauty in the first place was made a judge is beyond me. During the prop 8 campaign we were assured gays wouldn’t try to squash our free speech rights if they were given the legal right to marry. Perez Hilton went after a miss america contestant, and you can rest assured they would go after pastors in a heartbeat.
Yes i think they made the right choice, we need role models in society who are open minded and in all honesty there is nothing wrong with same *** marriage nor should there be! it doesn’t hurt anyone if a *** couple are wed so why do people need to carry on about it? I am straight but i fully support the *** community, what they do behind closed doors is their business so long as they don’t drag me into it… they should not be treated differently because of how they are!!!!
Her personal opinion (or even belief) should not be subject to Perez Hilton’s judgments.
Mr (?) Hilton is a perfect example
how *** guys are embarrassed and denegraded and misrepresented
by the flaming queens in our midst.
Look out, here comes the Thought Police!
Jim
its just that… a damn opinion. why do some people hold such high regards for opinions of celebrities? she is just a person like you and me, who cares what she said, im just happy she was able to express a complete thought.
This only shows how intolerant the so-called “champions of tolerance” truly are.
I applaud Carrie! Such a question should not even be asked at a beauty pageant — but it was, and she answered it honestly, even though she undoubtedly knew there was a good chance that it would cost her.
She chose to stick to her principles, instead of “selling them out” just to be Miss America. Good on her!
It’s good to know that there are still some people out there who stick to their core beliefs, even at the expense of losing something like this.
Carrie is a TRUE Miss America in a lot of people’s hearts and minds, including mine.
.
I think the question was asked just because she was Miss California, and they just had the Prop 8 vote a few months ago. If Miss Utah had been in the finalist, the same question would have been asked, with the same result if she gave a similar answer.
This question would not have been asked had Prop 8 failed in California.
It’s not her stand on the matter that was the problem, but her stumbling way of explaining it. For one, “great that Americans are able to choose” is simply not true. Only in four states are *** people allowed to marry. Also the “no offense to anybody” is fatuous.
Had she said something like “To me, the definition of marriage is one man and one woman.” Then she could have said whatever she wanted about the reasons why, and what she felt *** couples should have in the alternative (domestic partnerships; some sort of legal contract giving them essentially the same rights as married couples). She might even have been able to state a belief that homosexuality is wrong if she did so with plausibility and good taste.
It’s clear she was thrown by the question and stumbled. It’s not about her opinion nearly as much as her inarticulate response.
It doesn’t sound offensive to me. People are allowed to have opinions, they just shouldn’t be allowed to legislate them. It is enough for me that she recognizes we have the choice, and that she’s okay with that.
I’m an atheist. If she made the same remark about atheism instead of gays, she may have been met with cheers instead of boos.
Or maybe not…
i can’t believe people are saying she spoke poorly and that is what cost her the crown. yes, she did speak poorly BUT perez himself doesn’t agree with these replies. That isn’t what this article is even about.
C’mon people! let’s be honest. The SPIN on this article is not that miss california lost the crown because she spoke poorly. no. this article and many many others are saying she lost her crown because of her BELIEFS..over her opinion…which is against the constitution. Perez Hilton himself admits this.
she didn’t win, she lost. And she should lose. Why is it okay in this country to openly discriminate against a group of people. Let them do what they want it doesn’t hurt you. It is natural. Scientists have proved that there are *** animals. It is not a choice. Just leave them alone.
I don’t think anyone who is against civil rights should be allowed to represent my state and she should be stripped of her crown in disgrace . These girls are like ambassadors and their words are heard . They are role models to youth and bigotry is not what is needed any more we have had to much of that in the past .
The opinion of people giving more importance to t i t s than brain is, by essence, futile dear.
Carrie’s answer to the hot button question cost her the crown – at least according to Perez
Beautiful statement… cost her a crown or gained her a crown of gold eternally …I know she gained a eternal perfect crown of righteousness for standing in the face of adversity and speaking the truth .. good for her ..I’m so glad she lost .. I assume she is too .. god bless her
People, it is a BEAUTY PAGEANT! She’s not being elected to Parliament, thank the ancestral gods! The media jumped on this like squirrels on acorns.
She didn’t even answer the question correctly. She’s entitled to her OPINION; I thought ALL Americans had that right. I disagree with her opinion, but she has the right to voice it.
Perez Hilton needs an old fashioned Welsh ar53 beating for overacting and politicising a stupid beauty pageant. Someone needed attention and they got it in a negative way.
“In the Miss USA 2009 pageant”
Do they STILL do those things?
How primitive.
~
How did Perez Hilton get appointed to judge, really, what has he ever done to merit that position? He asked that question in bad fashion, with malicious intent. He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.
A- I respect her speaking her opinion.
B- She’s a terrible competitor for not realizing WHO was asking the question.
C- She sounds like a natural blonde… ^_^
D- She avoided the actual question
Would there have been the same reaction if it was a straight judge that asked and said her answer was why he chose not to choose her? The whole pageant concept should be thrown out anyways…but that’s my opinion.
This girl was touted as a sure winner. I think this was all a political ploy to make sure the other girl won. They should never ask a political question in these pageants. It was all a set up and just proves how crooked this stuff really is. Yes, it cost her the crown. It sends the bully message that you better answer like a left wing liberal Democrat or you will lose.
The questions shouldn’t have even been brought up. I think Perez Hilton was being a jerk by asking that question. Why weren’t all of the other contestants asked something so intense and polarizing as that? No matter what she said, she would hurt or offend someone. No matter what I believe, I’m happy that she stood up to famous and “powerful” people and said what she believed. To politicize the Miss USA pageant was a bad choice, but I think I know exactly why it was done- to create controversy. I mean, do you know anyone who watches that? Is this controversy the only reason most of us know it even happened over the weekend? American Idol gets about three times the viewers Miss USA does, and American Idol happens twice a week, whereas Miss USA happens once a year. Few are interested in it anymore, and they were just trying to remind people it’s around.
Of course, I think beauty pageants in general are stupid, so. . .
No, I don’t. However, she was wrong on the complaint that she lost because of her comments. Miss North Carolina won fair and square. Everyone knows Carolina girls are the best in the world!
Tex
No and I agree with the answer she gave.
Check out Miss California Carrie Prejean in the Miss USA 2009 pageant question/answer video clip, where she addresses legalizing *** marriage, saying, “In my country, and in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman.” Source Link :-
That question was cooked! Anyone could have gotten it. But the fact that it was there in the first place, is wrong! Perez is a hypocrite. She should sue, because last time I checked we are in a free country where gays can steal the rainbow, and Christians can say Jesus, and muslims can say Allah, there’s no law about it.
And please, the blooper about “opposite marriage” it was obvious. She meant to say “opposite *** marriages” – and she was trying hard to maintain her composure, in her own words, she dreaded that question.
I think for once in my lifetime, I have some consideration for a beauty queen.
And it’s even more relieving that she’s from CA. Someone needs to send a message. I think we tolerated these “Gay activists’ for way too long. Their agenda is not to live and let live, is to destroy anyone who begs to differ!
I seriously think they should consider another planet!
Speaking as a state title holder, she shouldn’t have attached her personal opinion to this question. The ‘gay marriage” question is a perfectly acceptable ‘final round’ live question. Miss CA wasn’t well prepared for this question and didn’t a “pageant ready response”.
The myriad of replies to just to this post on Yahoo! show what a hot-button issue *** marriage is. Despite personal opinion, she should have replied that it is up to each individual state’s legislators to decide what best represents their constituents.
